🔸️ Intro/Background 🎧📖 :
This was my first experience with immersive reading wherein you listen to the Audiobook while following the text in the actual book. I tried this way mostly because I didn’t want to zone out. Now I understand why it’s effective/enjoyable and has become so popular these days. Also I’m not someone who usually reads memoirs and I feel even less interested when it comes to celebrity memoirs BUT when I saw Cynthia Erivo has come up with her memoir I just couldn’t wait to read it! She’s truly one of the few celebrities I feel are worth getting to know about. I guess this is because contrary to the dramatic or temperamental side of celebrities we often see she embodies more of a hardworking and clear headed artist persona who values human experience above everything else.
So I instinctively knew that she was not someone to structure this from the high-headedness of becoming a celebrity but instead from the perspective of someone who genuinely wants to share her experiences and guide others who may be struggling or need to hear it without any filters.
✒️📚 Detailed Review (Spoiler-Free) :
I may have been fangirling just a bit when I went into it but it quickly escalated from just admiration for her publicly-known persona to something more. In this book, Cynthia picks a topic she wishes to talk about and then dives into her experiences on it, her lessons in life etc those type of things. I’m glad we don’t simply go about the details of her life from childhood to the stage she’s currently at which would’ve felt like an autobiography.
While I do adore her in general, I loved how she brings a fresh perspective to things and tries to motivate us while making some solid points using her own experiences as examples. After a point I felt she’s a gifted writer too. There’s never even a hint of boasting even when credit is due nor does she avoid admitting her own faults or shortcomings where it’s needed. It’s clear from this book that she’s a very authentic person or has rather nurtured that quality with care (never letting the fame get to her) and she’s perhaps even more wise than she let’s on in these incidents/reflections. I especially enjoyed the middle 25% to 75% a lot – it was very motivating in a gentle, reflecting manner.
Also my love for Wicked/Cynthia x Ariana and the rest of the team behind it is not hidden so I especially loved the insights she gives into her time working on that project. Another incident that sticks out or resonates is about her time studying at RADA.
👉 Conclusion :
Throughout, this book keeps that inspiring tone never getting boring even for a bit. It also never feels like a lecture quite the contrary infact. The writing is very accessible. Overall this book is very much like Cynthia utterly charming in it’s execution!
📌 Tip :
Even if you don’t know about her yet (which is highly unlikely) I still recommend researching about who she is and her work as a world-renowned singer, artist and an actor because who knows after doing so you may feel compelled to go checkout her work or read this book afterwards!
